In many cases we have gotten clients pages on page 1 for targeted keywords within hours. However, it's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string.

For competitive search terms with a higher value search term (much more likely to be buying customers) that receive several thousand searches per month or more, we would normally expect to see an increase within a week, and to be on page 1 within a few months.
